eBay Developer Profile: Bernd Ustorf, Outright
We are happy to be starting a new series of short profiles of eBay Developers, starting with Outright's Senior Web Developer. Do you want to apply to be profiled? Contact me at jpeach@ebay.com.
Title: Senior Web Developer
Company: Outright
How long have you been an eBay Developer?
I started working with the eBay Trading API and integrating Outright with Open eBay Apps in May, 2009.
Describe your business/App:
Outright is a bookkeeping application which can be installed as an Open eBay app. It tracks sellers' sales, expenses, sales tax and customer information, synchronizing nightly with data from the eBay Trading API and from the PayPal API.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to try developing on an eBay API?
Get the perspective of sellers who use eBay every day. Take advantage of the available documentation and tech support resources while prototyping and developing your application.
Be ready for large volume, both in number of users and depth of information.
What APIs have you played with?
- The Trading API, i.e., GetSellerTransactions, GetAccounts and GetOrders,
- Open eBay Apps (OpenSocial),
- Our app also uses the PayPal APIs, so I work with those regularly.
What’s your secret superhero power?
TDD, but that's no secret.

Attn: New Guidelines and Options for Return Policy
Developers:
Starting in late August, GeteBayDetails and the AddItem family of calls will be changed in the following ways to support the new guidelines:
RefundOption: A money back refund choice will be required for all returns. To support this:
- In late August 2011, GeteBayDetails will start returning a new "Money Back or Exchange" option in production and the sandbox. This option indicates that the buyer will have the choice to ask for either money back or exchange for the item they wish to return. Consider using this option when you have the depth of inventory to support an exchange for a different size, color, or undamaged unit. Otherwise, use the existing MoneyBack option if you have limited inventory.
- In early 2012, the MerchandiseCredit and Exchange options will be deprecated as separate options, and GeteBayDetails will stop returning these options in production. To help you with early testing, GeteBayDetails will stop returning them in the sandbox in late August 2011.
ReturnsWithinOption: In early 2012, the 3-day and 7-day choices will be deprecated, and GeteBayDetails will stop returning these options in production. To help you with early testing, GeteBayDetails will stop returning them in the sandbox in late August 2011.
Of course, we'll continue to support ReturnsNotAccepted as a policy. As always, even if you specify ReturnsNotAccepted, buyers may still return items if they don't match the item description and the buyer files an eBay Buyer Protection (dispute resolution) case.
In early 2012, we will block all AddItem, AddFixedPriceItem, RelistItem, and RelistFixedPriceItem calls for listings with deprecated refund and returns within options. To help you with early testing, these calls will be blocked in the sandbox before they're blocked in production. (Keep an eye on the developer blog for the timing.)
